  • The Department of Epidemiology (DoE) was established in the Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R.Medical University in February 1997 with assistance from the Government of Tamil Nadu.

    The journey so far..

    • The mission of the Department of Epidemiology is to apply the science of epidemiology for ‘Better Health Care’ and contribute to improvement of ‘Public’s Health’, individuals as well as populations. To realise this mission, DoE has been working to build institutional & systems capacity among Health professionals for strengthening education, training, research & policy development in the area of Public Health; primarily training epidemiologists to address relevant health problems in our community with multi-disciplinary, evidence based approach, such that the pathways of public health action are multi-sectoral.

    Goal

    • Provide the highest quality education in Epidemiology
    • Applying the findings of epidemiologic research & influence the formulation of Public Policy

    • Translating epidemiologic research findings into clinical medicine
    • Advance the Science of epidemiology

    Key Research Priorities

    • 'India is confronted both by infectious diseases, nutritional deficiencies and unsafe pregnancies as well as the challenge of escalating epidemics of non-communicable diseases. The Sustainable development goals (SDGs) are an invaluable opportunity to work together for and with those who are marginalised, forgotten and in need. The focus of our work is most closely linked to:
    • Goal 3 - Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
    • Target 3.3: ‘By 2030, end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases …’,
    • Target 3.4: ‘By 2030, reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being’
    • Target 3.6: ‘By 2020, halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents’
    • The pediatric age group, newer tools/technologies would be crosscutting in these areas. However, the holistic nature of our work means our programmes link closely to 16 of the 17 SDGs.
