Under the academic and research development programme, the institute of LIBRARY SCIENCES was established on JULY 1, 2002 in the main residential campus of C.S.J.M. University, Kanpur to impart and promote the multi and interdisciplinary higher education in library science by utilizing the modern concepts of teaching and research at master and doctorate level. The Institute is established with a view to impart higher education in the field of library science.

The department of the library and information science has been offering one year course in Bachelor of library and information science and one year course in master in library and information science at the moment.

The department is working with a vision to educate individuals for carreer as librarian ,Knowledge and information specialist and undertake instruction,research and service programme that current and emerging information and technology needs. The deparment is having advanced infrastructural facilities like information Technical lab with latest technology such as 15Pc,s with internet and latest Devices. The department focus mainly on the advanced teaching and research. The curriculum of the course is very comprehenshive and job oriented ,the department involes the students in practical,conference,discussion, debates .the department used to arrange a study tour locally and nationally for the students to visit well established libraries and information centres to let them aware of the functioning and services of the same. According to one report Library and information science has been ranked as one of the "best career of 2008."as india is moving towards a knowledge society with learning and research institutes,the demand and importance of library science is growing rapidly.

The department has organized a lecture series to promote professional skills. In the series Dr.Shri Ram Pandey from BHU, Varanasi delivered lecture on “ IT application in Libraries & Information Centres” on 11 December 2017, Dr.Sushant K. Pathy from IIT, Kanpur delivered lecture on “Use of Tools & Techniques in Modern Libraries” on 16 December 2017 and Mr. Sanjay Degloorkar from IIM, Lucknow delivered lecture on “ Quality Service in Library and Information Science 19 December 2017.
